Women Sack Ughelli Town in Protest Against Relocation of Market by Council Boss

Over 200 Delta State market women gathered in Ughelli town on Monday, to stage a peaceful protest against Godwin Adode, Chairman of the Ughelli North Local Government Area.

Market women who took to the always-bustling East-West Road barred the highway with their wooden chairs and tables, cursing the council chairman.

The protest was reportedly sparked by the council chairman’s proposal to relocate the market from Otovwodo to Okogbe Street in Ughelli.

The women have objected to the change. The demonstration, which began around 8:00 a.m., caused traffic congestion on the highway, stranding commuters and vehicles.

According to SaharaReporters, police officers and soldiers who arrived at the demonstration site to maintain law and order were chased away by the protesting women.

At the time of reporting this story, the demonstration was still going on, with some adolescents joining in.
