On Tuesday, gunmen suspected of being bandits burned dozens of passengers heading from Sabon Birni local government area to Sokoto town in what was a devastating tragedy.

The tragedy occurred at 9 a.m. in the vicinity of Gidan Bawa village, when bandits stopped the route and set fire to the vehicle.

The tragedy was confirmed by the Sokoto state police spokesperson, ASP Sanusi Abubakar, who added that the number of those murdered might be about 17.

He stated that the van had 24 passengers, seven of whom were admitted to an unnamed hospital.

“The van is transporting 24 passengers, of which 7 victims were admitted and an unidentified number of burnt dead bodies,” Sanusi wrote in response to a text message provided to him about the event.

According to Sabon Birni local government sources, the number of individuals burned in the truck could be more than what the police stated, as one family lost ten members in the tragedy.

Danchadi, a former local government chairman, stated that the occurrence was terrible.

According to him, they are still attempting to determine the precise number of casualties, and the figure may be very frightening.

According to Danchadi, a relative of one of those killed in the attack, the Turji-led section of bandits had occupied the whole Sokoto East senatorial district.

He claimed that criminals have imposed leaders in some villages and are collecting tithes, levies, and using slaves to govern residents in such areas.
