Manchester United beat Villarreal 2-0 in Michael Carrick’s debut game as interim manager, with late goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho advancing the visitors to the last 16 of the Champions League.

Carrick made four changes from Saturday’s 4-1 thrashing at Watford in what turned out to be Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s final game in charge, leaving Bruno Fernandes on the bench, although United struggled in the first half.

However, with the Group F match at El Madrigal obviously heading for a draw, Ronaldo popped up to break the deadlock with a great piece of anticipation to slip in and score his sixth Champions League goal of the season and his tenth overall.

After a well-worked team move, Sancho’s emphatic finish sealed the victory in the 90th minute to give United all three points and, as a result, they have qualified as group winners for the knockout phases with a game to spare, while Villarreal will have to fight it out for the runners-up spot with Atalanta, who drew 3-3 with Young Boys.
