INEC, the Independent National Electoral Commission, cautioned political parties asking it to extend the June 3 deadline to reconsider because it would not be possible.

INEC reaffirmed its commitment to sticking to the election schedule for 2023, but warned political parties about the consequences of not following it, saying that political parties must submit to the commission the list of candidates who must have emerged through lawful primaries.

The commission has given political parties till June 3 to finish their primary elections.

The INEC caution came as new information about why the APC included withdrawal letters with nomination forms supplied to candidates became available.

Barr. Festus Okoye, INEC’s National Commissioner in Charge of the Information and Voter Education Committee, said in a statement yesterday that the commission released the timetable and schedule of activities for the 2023 general election on February 26, 2022.

The timetable provides for parties to conduct their primaries for the nomination of candidates from April 4 to June 3, 2022.

According to him, all 18 political parties have served the required notices indicating the dates for their conventions, congresses, and primaries for the purpose of nominating candidates for various elective offices as specified in the Constitution and the Electoral Act, as required by Section 82(1) of the Electoral Act 2022.

According to him, some of the parties have started the procedure, and the commission has sent officials to keep an eye on it as required by law.
