Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has urged members of the media to continue to put pressure on President Muhammadu Buhari to sign the amended Electoral Act.

The governor claimed that it was the obligation of the media to inform Nigerians about the election results’ electronic transmission.

He stated that doing so would “rescue” the country’s democracy.

“Who are those to benefit more if the direct primaries is conducted? Who are those to benefit more if it is indirect primaries?” the governor asked yesterday in Abuja at the event “Gold Prize for Exceptional Leadership,” held by the ThisNigeria Media Newspaper.

“So, it is important that Nigerians should know why there should be electronic transmission of result in order to save our democracy.”

Governor Wike said that only when electoral processes are fair can those in power become accountable to the people, adding that accountable government can not be realized if security agencies are exploited to rig elections.

Dr Kayode Fayemi, the Chairman of the Nigerian Governors’ Forum and the Governor of Ekiti State, and Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah were also in attendance.

Governor Wike also took the opportunity to call on all Nigerians, regardless of religious identity, to stand united.

“There is the need for all of us to still believe that this country must be united,” he said. “But, if we want to move forward, we must drop the issue of where you come from. We must drop the issue of where you worship.”
