Ijaw leaders in Ondo State have continued to condemn the reported killing of llaje Fishermen in Twon-Brass Local Government Area of Bayelsa State by suspected Sea Pirates.
While speaking with our Correspondents in Akure, a Legal Practitioner, retired Permanent Secretary and Former Chairman of Ijaw National Congress (INC) Akure Chapter, Mr Iwabi Toboukepere Akpoebi Esq., described the attack as an unfortunate development and called on Ondo State Governor, Arakurin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN to reach out to his Beyelsa State Counterpart, His Excellency Gov Douye Diri to investigate the killings and bring the perpetrators to book. He further charged leaders and youths of both Ijaw and Ilaje areas of the State to toe the line of peace, avoid inciting one ethnic nationality against the other and eschew utterances that can provoke reprisals.
Also speaking, former Secretary to the Agadagba of Arogbo Ijaw Kingdom, High Chief Ebimiyenwei Akah said, ‘Ijaws in Ondo State do not know anything about the reported killing in Twon Brass Coast Corridor of Bayelsa State.
‘’We are peace loving people. No reasonable person in Arogbo will go to as far as Bayelsa State to kill people. In Arogbo, you cannot kill and stay in peace. Our culture and customs are against it.’’ He added
The President of Arogbo ljaw Indigenous Forum, Mr Jones Kibegha, also described the killing of fishermen from ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State in Bayelsa as a ‘senseless, barbaric, callous and unacceptable act by Sea Pirates’ among who are also ilajes.
Mr Jones noted that the activities of those Pirates operating along the Twon-Brass coast line stand condemned in its entirety by all Ijaws in Ondo State.
The statement reads in part: ”Those trying to rob in ljaws in Ondo State are only beating unnecessary drums of war. They are merchants of violence and enemies of peace. We must resist them.”
”My people in Ondo State do not have the slightest knowledge of what happened in far away Bayelsa State. We are at peace here with our Ilaje neighbors.”
Mr Jones further warned politicians to desist from politicising such heinous crime and stop making inflammatory comments that will incite the llajes against the Ijaws of Ondo State.
