President Buhari's New Year Address To Nigerians (FULL TEXT)

As Nigeria celebrates her the 60th independence anniversary, President Muhammadu Buhari has called for what he describes as a ‘sincere process of national healing’.

The President made the call on Thursday during his independence day address monitored by Ijaw News.

According to him, the healing was necessary as the nation has consistently focused on “contrived fault-lines” that have been “allowed unnecessarily to fester.”

“We need to begin a sincere process of national healing and this anniversary presents a genuine opportunity to eliminate old and outworn perceptions that are always put to test in the lie they always are,” the President said.

He held that to achieve a desired great country, Nigeria needs to solidify its strength, while citizens must increase their commitment and encourage each other to do that which is right and proper.

President Buhari further urged Nigerians to collectively resolve to continue as a nation beyond the sixty years already attained, through a clear understanding that as a nation “we are greater together than being smaller units of nationalities”.

He said his administration had been focused on rebuilding and laying the foundations for a sustainable Nigeria adding that “we have met and are still meeting the challenges inherent in any rebuilding initiative – more so that of a nation like Nigeria that has undergone avoidable levels of deprivation – but can be surmounted if we all work together.”
