According to the Defence Headquarters (DHQ), soldiers on internal security operations in the Niger Delta area had excellent success in the year 2021, arresting 567 suspected criminals.

Soldiers from Joint Task Force South-South Operation Delta Safe (OPDS) demobilized 1,423 illegal oil refining sites, 4,929 storage facilities, 536 large wooden boats known as “Cotonou boats,” 13 ships carrying crude oil cargo, 9 barges, and 137 trucks and other types of vehicles transporting illegally refined products.

Major General Benard Onyeuko, the Acting Director of Defence Media Operations, stated this in an Abuja statement on the joint task operations’ accomplishments between January and December 2021.

While noting that the Joint Task Force conducted both kinetic and non-kinetic operations across its vast jurisdiction, which included the Delta, Bayelsa, Rivers, Edo, Anambra, Imo, Abia, and Akwa Ibom Cross River States, Onyeuko said the terrain was swampy, waterlogged, and crisscrossed by a network of rivers and creeks. Most of the missions, he claimed, were intelligence-driven owing to the terrain and the desire to limit military fatigue.

To successfully address the area’s security concerns, Onyeuko explained that the OPDS was transformed into a multi-agency organization with elements drawn from 12 different security agencies, including the NA, NN, NAF, DIA, NPF, DSS, NSCDC, NCS, NIS, NCoS, NDLEA, and EFCC.

Protection of oil and gas infrastructure, anti-crude oil theft operations, removal of militants’/irates’ camps, and non-kinetic conflict resolution are among the actions he highlighted.
