Naomi Osaka Wins 2020 US Open Final After Comeback Win Over Azarenka

Naomi Osaka displayed her growing maturity in a convincing US Open finale to battle back against Victoria Azarenka and claim her third Grand Slam title.

Japanese fourth seed Naomi Osaka won 1-6 6-3 6-3 for only her second US Open title.

In the first set Naomi Osaka was overpowered and in danger of losing 3-0 in the second, but then took 10 of the next 12 games to secure momentum.

Azarenka in her first major final since 2013, was broken for 5-3 in the decider before Osaka served out.

As she took her second match point, Naomi Osaka screamed with delight, then laid quietly on the court, and looked at New York sky as she considered her latest accomplishment.

Naomi Osaka’s level raised considerably as Azarenka was unable to sustain the pressure she showed in a one-sided opening set.

The comeback helped ensure that Osaka, who won the 2018 US Open and the 2019 Australian Open, retained her record of winning every Grand Slam finale she’s played in.

“I don’t want to play you in any more finals, I didn’t really enjoy that, it was a really tough match for me,” Osaka told Azarenka in a teasing way.

She added: “It was really inspiring for me because I used to watch you play here when I was younger. I learned a lot, so thank you.”
