Manchester United survive Aston Villa FA Cup scare.
Manchester United defeated Aston Villa 1-0 at Old Trafford to go to the fourth round of the FA Cup.
Early on, Scott McTominay scored as he climbed highest to convert a precise Fred cross.
Villa were unfortunate not to have equalized before halftime.
They had a flurry of opportunities to pull level, and Ollie Watkins got the closest when he rattled the crossbar after a bad Victor Lindelof touch offered him an opening.
Emi Martinez, who got a hand on an excellent McTominay shot from distance, denied United from grabbing the lead shortly before half-time.
Danny Ings poked in from close range for the visitors 10 minutes into the second half, but the goal was disallowed following a long VAR review.
A John McGinn free-kick was lofted in and headed back across goal by Ezri Konsa for Ings to meet, but replays revealed Jacob Ramsey had obstructed Edison Cavani on the edge of the box while offside.
Villa had the ball back in the net minutes later.
Ings was set through one-on-one this time, and his chipped attempt past David De Gea and slid towards goal before Watkins punched the ball across the line as Lindelof closed in, but Ings was judged offside because he began his move too early.
In the last minutes, Villa’s surge ran out of steam, and United held on to advance.
