After completing his loan transfer to Roma, Arsenal midfielder Ainsley Maitland-Niles hopes to “show what I can do.”
Maitland-Niles will join the Italian club for the remainder of the season in order to earn more playing time after battling for playing time at the Emirates under Mikel Arteta.
The Arsenal academy product has five England caps and has made 132 appearances for the club, but has only started four games this season.
He hasn’t played at all since coming on as a substitute against Liverpool in November in a 4-0 loss.
“I am just delighted to be here and can’t wait to crack on,” the midfielder told Roma’s website.
On Friday, Arteta confirmed that the transfer was in the works and that Maitland-Niles had sought him to explain why he wanted to go on loan.
“He believes that the opportunity to move to Rome and working under Jose is a really good one,” Arteta said.
“When a player feels that way and has a strong argument like he has, it’s very difficult to turn it away, so we decided to let him go and we wish him all the best.”
Arsenal’s manager also admitted that the departure has left the team short on central midfielders, stating that the club would look to replace him in the January transfer window.
