Liverpool Sign Luis Diaz From Porto

Liverpool Sign Luis Diaz From Porto.

Colombian international winger Luis Diaz joined Premier League team Liverpool on Sunday from FC Porto, casting fresh question on the future of Egyptian sensation Mohamed Salah.

Diaz, 25, agreed to a contract extension until 2027 for an estimated sum of £37.5 million ($50 million), with an additional £12.5 million in possible incentives.

There is no end in sight to the ongoing discussions regarding Salah’s contract extension, who is now overseas at the Africa Cup of Nations.

“Liverpool Football Club have completed the signing of Luis Diaz from FC Porto, subject to the successful granting of a work permit and international clearance,” Liverpool said in a statement on their website.

“He joins Liverpool after two-and-a-half seasons with FC Porto, where he made 125 appearances and scored 41 goals.”

Diaz was said to be Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp’s main priority for the summer transfer window, but rising interest in the player, particularly from Tottenham Hotspur, compelled the Reds to act quickly.

He is currently on international duty with Colombia for World Cup qualifying games in 2022.

Liverpool dispatched a crew to Argentina, where Colombia will play on Tuesday, to undertake a physical so that the transfer could be finalized before the January transfer window closed.

Salah, as well as Liverpool teammates Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, will be out of contract in the summer of 2023, at which point they would be 31 years old.

Diaz would inject new life into Liverpool’s forward line and has a growing reputation after scoring 16 goals in 28 appearances for Porto this season.

He was also the highest scorer in last year’s Copa America, along with Lionel Messi, with four goals.
