Liverpool Advance To Carabao Cup Final After Victory Over Spinless Arsenal.
Liverpool advanced to the Carabao Cup final with a 2-0 victory against Arsenal at the Emirates.
Despite playing for more than 70 minutes – including injury time – with 10 men after Granit Xhaka was sent off for flying in on Diogo Jota, Mikel Arteta’s team did not surrender in the first leg.
With a full complement, they lasted little under 20 minutes before succumbing to a goal, Jota beating Takehiro Tomiyasu out wide, cutting inside, and fooling Aaron Ramsdale with a scuffed effort from the edge of the box.
It was a stomach blow for the hosts, who made an aggressive start and struck the crossbar early on via Alexandre Lacazette.
Bukayo Saka had sneaked in front of Andy Robertson to earn a foul just outside the area, and Lacazette had directed the following free kick towards goal, only for Caoimhin Kelleher to touch the ball onto the goal frame.
With little over 10 minutes remaining, Jota ran off Ben White’s shoulder and dinked over Ramsdale to give the visitors the victory.
While the goal was first chalked off for offside, a VAR check revealed that Jota was not offside, and the judgment was reversed.
Liverpool will now meet Chelsea at Wembley next month, prompting loud celebrations in the away end.
Meanwhile, Arsenal ended the night with 10 men as Thomas Partey received two yellow cards within three minutes of his return from the Africa Cup of Nations.
