After receiving the prized individual award at a ceremony in Paris, Lionel Messi has won an unprecedented seventh Ballon d’Or.
The 34-year-old, who also won in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, and 2019, has won the award for best player in the world more times than any other male player in history, two more than Cristiano Ronaldo.
Messi ended ahead of Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski, who was ranked second, and Chelsea midfielder Jorginho, who won the 2020/21 Champions League and Euro 2020 with Italy, was ranked third.
In 2021, Messi scored 41 goals and provided 17 assists for club and country, with the 34-year-old assisting Argentina to their first major international title, the Copa America.
Following the expiration of his contract, Barcelona’s precarious financial circumstances led Messi to leave the Camp Nou in August, with the Argentine making the startling move to Paris Saint-Germain.
