JUST IN: FG Lifts Twitter Ban.

Following President Muhammadu Buhari’s consent, the Nigerian government has removed the ban on Twitter activities in the nation.

The decision was announced by Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, CCIE, Chairman Technical Committee Nigeria-Twitter Engagement and Director-General National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA).

Kashifu said in an Abuja statement on Wednesday that the permission came as a result of a document addressed to Buhari by his Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof Isa Ali Ibrahim.

He said: “The Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) directs me to inform the public that President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has approved the lifting of the suspension of Twitter operation in Nigeria effective from 12 am tonight, 13th January 2022.

“The approval was given following a memo written to the President by the Honourable Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Prof Isa Ali Ibrahim.

“In the Memo, the Minister updated and requested the President’s approval for the lifting based on the Technical Committee Nigeria-Twitter Engagement’s recommendation.”

Nigerian Twitter operations were shut down in June 2021, just days after Buhari’s post was removed.

In November of last year, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, the Minister of Information, stated that “correspondence between us and Twitter has moved to an advanced stage.

“We still have a few challenges to work out,” Mohammed said.

“Twitter has met ten of the twelve standards set above.

“Very soon, all issues will be resolved in a way that will be good for both our country and Twitter.”
