Ijaws Renew Commitment To Self-Determination And Resource Sovereignty

Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan alongside notable Ijaw citizens head to Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State Capital, today, Saturday, December 4, 2021, for a one day All Ijaw Summit.

The Ijaw National Congress (INC) Worldwide is hosting the summit, which will take place at the Ijaw House.

Former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan is expected to attend as the Special Guest of Honour, while Bayelsa State Governor Senator Douye Diri, Delta and Rivers State Deputy Governors Barr. Kingsley Otuaro and Dr. (Mrs) Ipalibo Harry- Banigo will also be guests of honour.

Prof. Sofiri Joab Peterside, a renowned sociologist and political historian, will deliver the summit’s theme, “The Nigerian State and the Ijaw Question,” while High Chief F. J Williams will speak on “Re-Defining the Nigerian State and the Ijaw People.”

Prof. Benjamin Okaba, the INC’s president and the host of the Summit has stated Pa E. K. Clark, an Ijaw leader, will be the father of the day, and His Royal Majesty Justice F. F. Tabai, the Pere of Toumo Kingdom in Delta State, will be the chairman.

Ms. Ann Kio Briggs, an activist, will speak about The Imperatives of the Ijaw Quest for Self-Determination; Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow, while Engr. Charles Ambaiowei will speak on Reforms in Ijaw National Polity; The Need for Self Introspection.

It is worth remembering that the INC President established a 34-member Central Planning Committee for the summit in July led by Rear Admiral Wonyengidinikpete Yanga.

The summit would “provide an opportunity for a review of the Ijaw position in the current Nigerian Nation-State and create a platform to articulate a common position on the future of the Ijaw nation,” according to Prof. Okaba.

He also stated that the summit will be a gathering of all Ijaws, both at home and abroad, to re-define the Ijaw cause and to issue a declaration of the Ijaw position based on the summit resolutions.
