Ijaw Youths Shut Down Operations At The Oil Mining Lease 40

Ijaw youths have shut down operations at the Oil Mining Lease (OML) 40 in Ogbeti-Okun Oil Field operated by NPDC/Elcrest Joint Venture, under the aegis of the Egbema Youth Council (EYC) along the Benin River in Warri North Local Government Area of Delta State, over non-recognition and marginalization of their communities.

The youths staged a peaceful protest to air their frustrations against the oil companies, holding signs that read: “NPDC/Elcrest must recognise communities as host,” “We want women and youths employment,” among others.

According to them, they are demonstrating against marginalization by Elcrest/NPDC, which has been working in the area without benefit since 2013; they are not recognized as host communities, have no employment, no potable water to drink, no light, and so on.

They resolved not to stop until NPDC authorities addressed concerns and provided the legal GMoU that would guide future operations.
