Ihenacho Helps Super Eagles Defeat Mo Salah’s Egypt.
Nigeria won a crucial 1-0 match against Egypt in Garoua on Tuesday thanks to a spectacular first-half effort from Kelechi Iheanacho.
The match between the two group favourites had a one-sided feel to it, with Nigeria controlling the game for long stretches while Egypt struggled to make an impact.
Nigeria took the lead via Leicester City forward Kelechi Iheanacho, whose shot from the edge of the box reached the top corner.
Nigeria deserved the goal since they put the Pharaohs under a lot of pressure.
Egypt, one of the favourites to win this year’s championship, struggled to gain a foothold in the game and seldom bothered Nigeria goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, who was often a spectator.
Nigeria may have increased to their total had they not squandered a slew of chances against a dismal Egypt team led by captain Mohamed Salah.
Iheanancho, Taiwo Awoniyi, and Chidera Ejuke all came close for Nigeria but were denied by Egyptian shot-stopper Mohamed El Shenawi’s outstanding reflexes.
Augustine Eguavoen’s side comfortably held on for a well-deserved victory to kick-start their AFCON campaign.
The win puts the Super Eagles in provisional first place in Group D, while Carlos Queiroz’s Egypt has their work cut out for them in their last two group games if they are to qualify.
