Dominion Okoro, a 25-year-old housemaid, admitted to killing Madam Maria Igbinedion, 85, the mother of a former Governor of Edo State, Chief Lucky Igbinedion, on Tuesday in Benin.

Dominion, who was detained in her hometown of Calabar, Cross River State, described how she carried out the deed on December 2 by hitting her late boss in the head with a stool while sleeping.

The suspect revealed that she stole N100,000, a wristwatch, and jewelry from the Igbinedions’ GRA residence while being displayed at the Edo State Police Command Headquarters in Benin.

She said, “I killed mama to carry her money. She did not offend me. While she was sleeping on her bed, around 12.01am on December 2, 2021, I used a stool to hit her in the head and she shouted for help; but only the gateman was around and he did not hear the shout. Mama later died.

“I waited till 4am on December 2, 2021, before leaving the house with mama’s N100,000, wristwatch and jewellery. I escaped to Cross River State, but I was later arrested by the police.”

On December 10, the deceased was laid to rest in Benin.

Patience, the key suspect’s older sister, was caught first, before Dominion was apprehended and taken to Benin for questioning.

Patience said that neither she nor their parents were aware of her sibling’s crime.

The arrest of Dominion took time, effort, and money, according to Phillip Ogbadu, the Edo State Commissioner of Police, who also stated that no less than 20 people were detained before the culprit was apprehended.

427 suspected criminals were detained for kidnapping, armed robbery, murder, burglary, and other crimes in the fourth quarter of 2021, according to Ogbadu, with a big cache of weaponry, ammunition, and money being confiscated.

All of the accused would be charged in court, he said.
