FG To Investigate Delta Crude Oil Vessel Explosion

FG To Investigate Delta Crude Oil Vessel Explosion.

The House of Representatives has called on the federal government to look into the recent explosion of a crude oil vessel in Delta State‘s Escravos Estuary.

The House particularly requested that the Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources examine the cause of the explosion aboard the Floating Production Storage and Offloading Vessel (FPSO), the Trinity Spirit, at its plenary on Wednesday in order to prevent a repeat of the disaster.

It also urged the federal government to act quickly to alleviate the consequences of the explosion on impacted areas by cleaning up the polluted waterways and coastlands, as well as providing relief supplies and compensating individuals who have been harmed by the oil leak.

Following the passage of a motion presented by Julius Pondi of Bayelsa State at plenary, the House passed the resolution.

He mentioned the recent news of a major explosion on the Trinity Spirit, a floating production, storage, and offloading crude oil tanker, and her subsequent sinking off the coast of Nigeria in the Escravos Estuary in Delta State.

According to the congressman, the occurrence aroused concerns that the ship’s crew members may have perished in the flames that enveloped the ship following the explosion.

Pondi explained that: “The Trinity Spirit Vessel was the main production facility for the OML 108 in Nigeria’s offshore Ukpokiti oil field in the Niger Delta, with the capacity to process up to twenty-two thousand barrels of crude oil per day with a storage capacity of 2 Million barrels.”

He expressed concern that the vessel’s explosion, which destroyed 50,000 barrels of oil in storage, has harmed the country’s economy and would take a long time to recover.

“Also worried about the environmental impact the explosion has had on the immediate and surrounding coastal communities such as pollution of the waters, death of aquatic animals, and the dispersal of surviving fish, with its attendant economic hardship on the people who are predominantly seafood farmers.

“Commends the assistance rendered by the Chevron team operating in the Escravos Estuary, the clean Nigeria Associates, community stakeholders, and local fishermen who responded swiftly to save the burning vessel;
Cognizant of the need to urgently provide relief materials to the affected communities,” Pondi added.

The House instructed its Committees on Petroleum Resources (Upstream and Downstream) and Host Communities to conduct an on-the-spot examination of crude oil tanker explosions with the goal of making recommendations to prevent a repeat.
