Youths in Akure have joined the rest of Nigeria to intensify demands for urgent action in the nation’s police architecture.
Protesters in their thousands were sighted by our correspondent along Oba Adesida Raod calling on the government to take decisive action on the disbanded Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) unit.
They bore placards reading ‘Say no to Police Brutality’ ‘#EndSARS’ ‘#SARSMUSTEND’ amongst others to press home their agitation.
One of the protesters who identified himself as ‘Mr Wale’ told our correspondent that the protest was borne out of the frustration of Nigerian youths in the hands of the police operatives.
“The brutality of SARS can no longer be tolerated. They have killed many innocent youth. They will come with POS, ask for your ATM card and collect money. If you say you don’t have money, they brutalize you. That is why we are say, SARS must be disbanded now,” he said.
It is worthwhile to note that the #ENDSARS protests happened in spite of the agreement of the Federal Government to the demands of the protesters with the creation of a Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT) unit.
