Edo, Delta Communities Benefit From NPDC Scholarships.

The Nigeria Petroleum Development Company Limited’s yearly scholarship initiative for its host communities has helped over 60 villages in Edo and Delta State.

Mr Dahiru Abubakar, Manager, NPDC’s Community Relations Department, said this over the weekend in Warri, Delta State, during the NPDC’s 2020/2021 scholarship test.

Abubakar, who was represented by Mr Noble Imabibo, team leader of the Warri Examination Centre, said the initiative was part of NPDC’s corporate social duty to its host communities.

He said the exam was being held concurrently in three locations: Warri, Delta State, Egbema, Imo State, and Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

He said. “The Warri centre has about 170 candidates selected from 60 communities across Edo and Delta, 22 in Egbema and 145 in Port Harcourt centre.”

“In total, we have 337 candidates from the different host communities sitting for the examination out of which successful candidates would be awarded the scholarships.

“Over 10,000 students have so far been awarded the scholarships since the programme started in 2000.

“The NPDC scholarship scheme has helped to reduce youth restiveness in the communities and has helped in human capital development in the communities hosting its operations.

“Communities do the nominations and send the list to NPDC for the scholarship examinations.”

He did reveal, however, that plans were in the works to provide an online venue for pupils to complete the exam, especially now that the COVID-19 epidemic had made personal interaction nearly impossible.

According to him, NPDC management hired the Federal University of Petroleum Resources as a consultant to administer the test in order to ensure a transparent, free, and fair process.

Prof Prekeyi Tawari-Fufeyin, the coordinator of the NPDC scholarship examination, praised NPDC for the opportunity offered to the students.
