Delta2023: Ibori Allegedly Seeks Okowa's Support Over Acceptance Of Own Candidate

According to rumours making the rounds, former Delta State Governor James Onanefe Ibori is allegedly making frantic attempts to persuade the state governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa, to nominate his political godson, Olorogun David Edevbie, for the 2023 guber race in Delta state.

According to available information, Governor Okowa is not fond of Edevbie as a probable successor to the governorship.

This is despite recent rumours that the governor has chosen to appoint someone of Urhobo ethnicity to take over the job in 2023.

Edevbie, a former finance commissioner in Okowa’s first term and chief of staff in the governor’s second term, was fired by the governor after expressing interest in running for governor in 2023.

Sources close to the powers that be have also intimated that the DC-23, a lobby organization of a few Urhobo people, is quietly trying to designate Edevbie as its ultimate candidate.

Okowa’s alleged hesitation to pursue the Edevbie route may be linked to the 2014 PDP primaries, in which David Edevbie fought him and finished second in the primary election that produced Okowa as PDP candidate.

Edevbie’s actions ran counter to the PDP’s zoning scheme, which said that it was definitely Delta North’s time to produce the governor.

Despite the zoning agreement, Edevbie’s entry into the election is said to irritate the governor.

In the general elections of 2023, Ibori is said to have aligned himself with Edevbie, under whose auspices the DC-23 is purportedly advocating for Urhobo governor while secretly working for Edevbie.

Ibori is said to have taken measures in recent days to communicate with prominent persons in the country in order to persuade Okowa to nominate Edevbie for the 2023 governorship contest.

According to reports, one of the candidates discussed is former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who served as a civilian president from 1999 to 2007. According to our source, Ibori met with Obasanjo in Lagos to assist convince Okowa to support Edevbie in the 2023 race.

While Ibori is making subterranean movements, Delta residents believe that the age of godfathers in the state must come to an end and Okowa’s rise was not aided by godfathers.

Deltans believe that Ibori should step down so that persons of independent minds chosen by the majority may take over the reins of leadership.
