DELTA 2023: Everyone Can Contest, No Zoning – Pondi
Hon. Julius Pondi, the lawmaker representing Burutu Federal Constituency, has stated that there is nothing like zoning in Delta state.
As the election for 2023 approaches, there have been statements and rebuttal about zoning. It was previously speculated that, because each of the three senatorial zones has had a shot at the governorship, the incumbent governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa, would pass over to an Urhobo politician to restart the cycle based on the zoning theory.
Those opposed to the concept claimed that there is no such thing as zoning in Delta State and that the most that can be done is a “gentleman’s arrangement.”
In a recent interview with journalists at the just-concluded maiden launch/unveiling of the Congress Newspaper in Warri, Hon. Pondi stated that the 2023 election is for everyone because there is no such thing as zoning.
He said: “Come 2023, all of us can contest. Whoever that emerges, we can form a team from there.”The lawmaker was of the view that candidates from the various senatorial districts had previously contested the governorship elections in previous years and a winner emerged.
He added: “Have you seen the declaration made by the central in 2014? If there was zoning, what was that declaration for? Whoever becomes the governor is a Deltan.”
