Catholic Bishops, Oyedepo Backs #EndSARS Protests

OPINION: Governance, Social Media Regulation And Nigerian Society

The Catholic Bishop Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) have backed the ongoing #EndSARS protests in different parts the nation.

The CBCN in a statement issued on Saturday by its president, Most Rev. Augustine Obiora Akubeze said the protest was an accurate representation of the problem in the country and was morally justified.

They lamented that many lives had been wasted through unnecessary brutality and wrong application of force.

The Bishops, however, advised the concerned youths to avoid any form of violence during the protests.

Similarly, the Presiding Bishop of the Living Faith Church Worldwide, Bishop David Oyedepo, has warned against the shooting of youths protesting against police brutality, extrajudicial killings, and extortion in the country.

He explained that the youths have good justifications to protest, adding that killing them during the protest “is a sacrilege”.

Oyedepo said, “Every man has a right, legitimately so, to express his displeasure and pains. Everybody has it.

“I kept quiet for a while because in 2015 I warned this nation, vehemently, consistently… because I saw the dangers ahead and you can tell.

“The most gruesome season in the life of this nation is in the last five years, where lives have no value, wanton killings here and there.
