Aubameyang Set For AFCON Departure After COVID Related Heart Issues.

Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang is expected to return from the Africa Cup of Nations early for additional evaluation of his cardiac problems.

After being diagnosed with “cardiac lesions” caused by Covid-19, the Gabonese striker missed his team’s opening two games in Cameroon.

When Aubameyang arrived in Africa, he tested positive for the virus and was one of three players to be diagnosed with the illness.

And, after speaking with Arsenal medical professionals daily, the 32-year-old looks certain to miss the rest of the tournament and return to England.

In a statement, the Gabonese football federation stated that both captain Aubameyang and midfielder Mario Lemina, once of Southampton and now of Nice, had been allowed to return to their clubs.

The reason for this, according to manager Patrice Neveu, is to allow the players to “be treated and taken care of,” but they have convinced Arsenal that the problem is minimal.

Aubameyang was anticipated to hunt for a new club after being stripped of his captaincy and banished from the first-team group at the Emirates Stadium in December.

Gabon will play Morocco in their last Group C match tomorrow in Yaounde.

With four points from two games and a disputed late goal against Ghana, they are well positioned to advance.
