Aubameyang Set For AFCON Departure After COVID Related Heart Issues

Aubameyang Out Of Gabon-Ghana Clash After Fears Over ‘Cardiac Lesions’.

Following his recovery from Covid, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been forced to miss Gabon‘s Africa Cup of Nations match against Ghana due to concerns over “cardiac lesions.”

After returning a positive Covid test upon his arrival in Cameroon, the Arsenal attacker has yet to play at AFCON.

“According to the CAF [Confederation of African Football] medical commission, the players Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, Axel Meye, and Mario Lemina, barely out of Covid isolation, cannot take part in this match,” the Gabonese Football Federation said in a statement released ahead of Gabon’s Group C match against Ghana.

Aubameyang returned to Gabon’s training camp earlier this week, and it was believed that he would be fit to play against Ghana in Yaounde, where he would have faced Arsenal teammate Thomas Partey.

It’s uncertain how long he’ll be out, but given the possibility of a slight cardiac problem, medical personnel are likely to be cautious.

“Medical examinations may have shown cardiac lesions. CAF did not want to take any risks.”

In the absence of Aubameyang, Gabon will face an uphill battle to qualify for the AFCON knockout rounds. Few would argue that he is their most prominent player, with 29 goals in 71 appearances for his nation, and as team captain, he would be severely missed on and off the field.
