Willian, Gabriel Shine On Debut As Arsenal Beat Fulham

Arsenal debutants, Willian and Gabriel were in fine form for the gunners as the North London club beat Fulham 0-3 at Craven Cottage.

Willian would have gotten a goal but was denied first by the keeper and that saw Alexander Lacazette slot in the rebound and later by the woodwork after a fine freekick.

The Brazilian then went on to set up fellow new signing Gabriel and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to score second-half goals giving Arsenal the three points at Craven Cottage.

Played with Chelsea much of his time in England as a wide forward or winger, Willian was used more centrally in Arteta ‘s system at Fulham on Saturday, and Willian’s pass for Arsenal’s third proved why he was there.

There’s always the passing range, even though the legs are on the wane. With width provided in Arteta ‘s system from deeper, Willian can cut inside-a position from which he created three chances, more than anybody else on the field, with two of those chances contributing to goals.

Arsenal trusting Gabriel in the centre of the defensive line looked stupid as the Brazilian made an early debut mistake that almost let Fulham score, but he calmed down, settled in, netted the Gunners’ second and picked up the man of the match award for his confident performance, repaying Arteta’s trust in him.

He made two tackles, three clearances and a team-high 107 successful passes and earned a bit of luck from Willian’s corner as he became the 10th Arsenal player to score on his debut in the Premier League.

Arsenal lost their final two 2019-20 league games to Tottenham and Aston Villa, but a win Craven Cottage was secured as soon as Lacazette scored in eight minutes to become the first man to score the first goal of a Premier League season on two occasions.

Fulham enjoyed almost half the possession but posed little threat to the defense of Arsenal as the challenge encountered by the play-off winners of last season’s Championship was laid bare.

Arsenal host West Ham next Saturday, while in four days ‘ time Fulham will be in EFL Cup action at Ipswich Town.
