Alexander Zverev set up a semi-final clash with Novak Djokovic in the 2021 ATP Finals with a strong 6-2 6-4 victory over Hubert Hurkacz, who can no longer make the last four.
As a result of the win, Zverev has clinched second place in the Red Group, making the match between Daniil Medvedev and Jannik Sinner on Thursday evening a dead rubber, with the former already through and the latter out.
In the first set, Zverev raced to a commanding 5-1 lead after the susceptible Hurkacz was broken twice early on and the number three seed soon found his first serve.
Hurkacz continued to struggle as Zverev earned his first set point after only 19 minutes, but the Pole took advantage of a fortunate net cord and pounded it out to extend the opening set by one game.
However, Zverev wasted no time in clinching the first set 6-2, having only missed two first serves in the first set. Hurkacz was able to maintain his composure for the start of the second set, but a succession of awful forehand errors allowed Zverev to break in the ninth game for a 5-4 lead before serving out to win in straight sets.
